Former World Cup finals referee Graham Poll believes Fernando Torres will be afforded more protection by officials in South Africa this summer than he receives in the Barclays Premier League.

The Liverpool striker, who marked his return from injury with a goal in Spain's 6-0 win over Poland on Tuesday, is often the target of a physical approach from defenders domestically in their attempts to thwart our No.9.

However, Poll feels protecting star players such as Torres will be a priority for referees over the coming weeks at the World Cup.

"I think there are two perspectives to look at," he said.

"At international level, and especially at World Cups, referees are instructed to protect the skilful players, such as Torres.

"In the Premier League, on the other hand, the emphasis is on fast football and tempo and physicality, so there can't be too much interference in that respect.

"I certainly think Fernando can expect better protection at the World Cup than he gets domestically."

Meanwhile, Poll revealed his gratitude to Anfield duo Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher after they sent messages of support to the 46-year-old following an infamous error in the 2006 finals.

The Hertfordshire-born official issued three yellow cards to Croatia player Josip Simunic before finally sending him off during a clash with Australia.

Poll called time on his refereeing career a year later and admits he appreciated the Reds duo's gesture.

"I have to say I'm such a huge fan of Stevie; he gave me a shirt when he found out I was retiring, and signed it with a great message, which was a fantastic gesture," he added.

"He also texted me after my error in 2006, as did Jamie Carragher, with a message of support. I really appreciated that.
